Top 4 tips to learn History subject.

by Vivek Singh | July 3, 2013

History is one of the subjects students don't like as they need to remember a lot of things including event description and date. Without mentored planning, they feel uncomfortable in doing this. If they don't take the necessary steps systemically, they end up with low score in tests or examinations. I studied History for ten years and enjoyed this subject a lot. To me, History has been a tricky subject and I always tried to figure out tricks to beat the history. In nutshell, I found these four important tips which can be useful for both teachers are well as students to learn History in effective way. Here you go:

1: First understand and then memorize: Well, some people can say that this formula stands good for every subject. That's true, but in the case of History the sequence is more important. You need to draw a picture in mind that what exactly happened and how does sub-events relate each other. Once you understand what actually happened and what were the major outcomes of that particular event, it will be far easier to memorize.
2. The reasons behind the event: Understanding the reasons behind the historical events is important. This not only helps you to draw the imaginary flowchart to relate the multiple events but also, it gives you clear idea behind the event. Remember, without knowing the reasons behind the event, it's not only tough to understand the event but, most likely very soon you will forget the event.

3. The consequences that followed the events. Learning and understanding the outcomes or consequences followed by the event is very important to learn History in effective way. For an example, in Indian history before learning about "Quit India Movement" which happened during 1942, it's important to learn the previous movements and relate those major events. Learning the consequences helps a lot to relate the events, which is the key to learn History. "Jallianwala Bagh Kand" happened in 1919 in India. Find out what were the consequences of the events and how do these events relate.

4. Summarize: Summarizing the whole event in a couple of lines is important to learn and remember the historical events. By doing this, you not only reframe the event in your own words but also you are preparing valuable notes for your examination. For an example, Boston tea party happened in 1773. If you go through the whole event you can write more than 20 pages. The smart ways of learning and memorizing this event is to go through the event carefully and write 5-6 lines in your own words and, then try to focus on those lines while relating events.

Students, it's not necessary that all of the tips help to everyone. Everyone has own tricks to learn and understand various subjects. But, I am sure about one thing; History is the subject which we need to understand before memorizing. Memorizing hundreds of dates and events is never easy, but if you use above four tips to learn History will become your favorite subject.
