1. More than 2,500 Bihar school teachers fail teaching competency test for second time

Following reports of poor teaching standards in schools, the Bihar government had begun conducting teacher competency tests to ensure better standards of school teachers. The results, however, have shown a high number of teachers not able to clear the competency test. Teachers failing to clear the competency test for the first time are given a second chance, but those unable to clear the competency test for the second test will be required to leave teaching. The Bihar government has decided to sack over 2,500 contractual school teachers after they failed to clear two consecutive competency tests, said officials.

2. CAT 2013: Test takers claim discrepancies in recent results

Jan 15. The test takers of CAT 2013 claim some discrepancy in the CAT results which were declared on 14 Jan, Thursday. 3000 test takers out of 1.73 lakhs claimed that that their scores are radically different from what they had expected and particularly dismal in the verbal section.

The officials of IIMs have different opinion on this matter. According to IIM officials every year after the results are announced the student discontent is reported. Furthermore, candidates who have answered just one question correctly have acquired over 55 percentile scores, due to the marking pattern of the CAT examination. Candidates who scored less than 55 percentile possibly did so due to negative marking, the officials added.

3. RRB recruitments: Indian Railways to hire for 26,567 posts

Jan 14. The recruitment will be done for two posts: assistant loco pilot (ALP) and technician categories such as technician, signal GR ll, telecommunication maintainer, wireless maintainer, moto driver, carpenter, signal GR Ill, fitter, blacksmith, painter and mechanic.
The pay scale for the jobs is between Rs 5,200 and Rs 20,200 with a grade pay of Rs 1,900.
The vacancies have been put out by Railway Recruitment Boards in Ahmedabad, Ajmer, Allahabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Muzaffarpur, Bilaspur, Chandigarh, Chennai, Gorakhpur, Guwahati, Jammu and Srinagar, Kolkata, Malda, Mumbai, Patna, Ranchi, Secunderabad, Siliguri and Thiruvananthapuram.


4. ICFAI Business School Aptitude Test (IBSAT) results announced

ICFAI Business School Aptitude Test (IBSAT 2013) exam results are declared by ICFAI Foundation For Higher Education University. The candidates, who qualify on the basis on IBSAT, will attend the selection process during 18-26 February, 2014 at IBS Hyderabad.

6. IIT, Bombay announced Admission Notification for Management Programmes (2014-16)

Jan 14. Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay invited applications for admission to M.Mgt. Programmes for the Academic year (2014-16). The candidates eligible can apply online on or before 3 February 2014. IIT Bombay, the second in the chain of IITs, was set up in 1958. It was the first IIT to be set up with foreign assistance.

8. 151 Years Old Patna College Demanding For a University Status

Jan 16. The faculty of the 151 year-old Patna College has been vying for university status for the independent college. In the meeting of the Patna College Staff Club which held under the chairmanship of principal Ras Bihari Prasad Singh on 16 January 2014 in Patna, various proposals and demands were raised and discussed to be put before the Central and State Government.
The chief demand was to convert the college into a University. Teachers in the meeting said that many young colleges in the country got converted to Universities, and few have also received the status of 'deemed universities'.

9. 59 of 61 projects submitted at Jamia found 'plagiarized'

59 out of 61 projects submitted by the faculty members and students at Jamia Millia Islamia University has been found plagiarized, as they have been fully or partially lifted from various sources.
As many as 33 submissions with plagiarised content were submitted by faculty members of Jamia.
The university, with the help of a newly-introduced software, turnitin has found that 59 of the total 61 project works done by faculty members and students in the past three months contained materials lifted from various sources.

10. IITs to compete as single unit in world university rankings

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has hinted that all the 13 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) may compete as a single unit at the global university rankings to secure a place among top universities in the world
Higher education secretary, Ashok Thakur giving an indication in this regard said that the idea is to position the IITs as a single unit much like the IIT brand which has become an entity in itself for finding a place among the top three best institutes the world-over.
