by Vivek Singh | Nov 30, 2013

There are many top most universities in USA. Having a degree from USA always helps you in growing your career. Below are the 10 major steps to do MS in USA.

Research: Consider Google your friend. Do extensive search to get the list of universities in USA based on your skills and interest. Create a list of universities with name, location and majors.

Focus on Timeline: Most of the universities in USA accept the applications in fall (August) and spring (January) semesters. Add a field named application deadline in the results of your search.

Check your financials: Do online search or call directly to the schools to know about the tuition fees and scholarships available. Plan to meet the funds needed assuming that there is no scholarship provided. Visa officer would also be interested to know this, so plan it carefully.

Get your passport: In most of the countries including India, Passport is used as identity proof for writing GRE, TOEFL and other computer based exams. Get this done before going ahead for next step.

Register for tests: Register for TOEFL and GRE/ GMAT exams. TOEFL stands for Test of English as Foreign Language. It is an aptitude test for testing your English, not as a subject but as a foreign language. This means they would be more interested to know if you are comfortable in understanding and writing US English. Most of the schools accept GRE scores for MS and GMAT for MBA courses.

Submit scores: While writing GRE and TOEFL, at the end of the test you get a chance to send the scores to up to 5 schools. If you are able to achieve satisfactory scores, use this opportunity to send the scores to the schools you are interested in. Once you are out of examination room, you need to pay for any additional score card. American Universities don't accept photocopy of GRE/TOEFL/GMAT scorecards. Send the scores to the universities. If you need more score cards, request to the test providers by paying appropriate fees.

Application preparation: Once you are done with these tests, visit the listed schools online and prepare the list of the documents needed. Generally, most of the schools need transcript from you school where you have passed your bachelor degree, statement of purpose (a write-up to explain why you want to pursue this course), recommendation letters, proof of tuition funds as back statements or CA signed letter, copy of degree certificate, affidavit of support and resume. Transcript is the marks of all semesters on a singles page signed by registrar. Transcripts should be closed envelop.

Apply: Prepare all of the documents needed for applying. This may include tuition fees proof, credit card details and application fees. Apply to the interested universities. You may send the packet by FedEx or any other courier services. Call the universities to make sure if there would be someone to receive the packet and it's not a post box address. You can also opt for acknowledge receipt.

Get I-20: Once admission is confirmed, you pay SEVIC fees as per the instruction of the university. After paying SEVIS fees, wait till you get I20. I20 is the admission approval document. This is very important document which shows your immigration related status in USA. Your stay is limited in USA till the expiry of this document. This document describes about the approved scholarship, description/ length of the course and tuition fees.

Get Visa: Apply to the US embassy to the F1 visa. The main documents needed for F1 visa are I-20, proof of funds, affidavit of support, bank/ CA documents, proofs of returning back to home country and tests' score cards. Once you get the visa, you are all set to fly USA!
